Routine Screening for Carotid Artery Disease is NOT Recommended
Henry I. Bussey, Pharm.D.
February, 2008
Reference: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Screening for carotid artery stenosis: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendation statement. Ann Intern Med. 2007 Dec 18;147(12):854-9.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force reviewed available data in 2007 and specifically recommended against the routine screening for carotid artery disease in asymptomatic patients. Part of their analysis included the risk associated with confirmatory digital subtraction angiography (stroke rate of about 1%) and/or the risk associated with unnecessary carotid endarterectomy in those who did not have adequate confirmatory tests performed (approximately 2% to 4% risk of stroke, death, or myocardial infraction).
