DVT Reduced By Systematic, Guideline-Based Prevention Program

Investigators in France reported a significant reduction in DVT (diagnosed by routine ultrasound) from about 13% to 8% through a guideline-based program that consisted of a presentation with educational materials and audit-feedback for the physicians of the approximately 1400 patients involved in the study.
Patients were at least 65 years of age and were in a post-acute care setting. The use of graduated compression stockings (not pharmacologic interventions) was increased after the intervention.
The study was highlighted in Journal Watch which referenced the current American College of Chest Physicians Consensus Conference on Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Therapy as the source of the guidelines (available at: http://www.guideline.gov/summary/summary.aspx?
